‘Done over by Max’: Wolff blames Verstappen for lost Monza pole

A front-row starting position at Monza usually offers reason to celebrate, but Mercedes boss Toto Wolff left the paddock with a bitter taste in his mouth after Saturday’s qualifying session.

Despite entering the decisive Q3 session as the clear favorite, George Russell missed out on pole position by an agonizing 0.060 seconds to Alpine’s Pierre Gasly.

The failure to secure top spot was blamed on Red Bull rival Max Verstappen, who ruined the Briton's crucial final flying lap, according to Wolff.

Tactics at Parabolica

While Gasly delivered a flawless shock performance to snatch his maiden career pole position, Wolff pointed the finger directly at Red Bull's star driver for bottlenecking the field on the out-lap and destroying the aerodynamics required for Russell’s final attempt.

“Yeah, I think at the end where he got done over by Max in the final run when launching the lap,” Wolff told

"It was just much too close, and that compromised the lap time eventually and that lost pole position.”

The 28-year-old Mercedes driver corroborated his team boss's frustration, revealing that Verstappen backed up the pack right at the final corner to avoid giving anyone behind him a toe down the main straight.

“Everything was all looking fine but then going into Parabolica, Max just slammed on the brakes and didn't want to be the lead car," Russell explained.

"In hindsight, it would probably have been better not trying this, but P2 is a good place to start.”

Title implication and race day realities

The qualifying compromise arrives at a critical juncture in the World Championship fight.

With direct title rival and Mercedes team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli relegated to the back of the grid following an engine penalty, the Italian Grand Prix represents a prime opportunity for Russell to slash his 59-point championship deficit.

Yet Wolff refused to treat Sunday's race as a foregone conclusion, warning that beating Gasly and Alpine's slippery, low-drag package on Monza's high-speed straights will be no easy task.

“You always need to take everybody seriously,” Wolff said.

"They have a huge amount of straight-line speed. They’ve taken away a lot of drag, and on a single lap, that proved to be what is necessary.

“Race is a completely different ball game, so we shall see.”

The Mercedes boss was similarly realistic about Antonelli’s chances of executing a spectacular recovery drive from the rear of the grid.

Downplaying any expectations of the local hero carving through the pack to fight for a podium spot, Wolff signaled that damage limitation is the team's primary realistic goal.

“I think it’s too much to ask,” Wolff conceded. “You can see it becomes so difficult once you get past a certain group of backmarkers, the performances are so close that unless you play a very different strategy and put a bit of a gamble in, I don’t think it’s possible.”
