Spanish GP: Norris stuns - snatches pole from Antonelli!

Lando Norris unexpectedly snatched pole position from Kimi Antonelli by just 0.011 seconds in a thrilling first qualifying session at Madrid’s brand-new Madring, denying Mercedes a fourth consecutive Saturday triumph.

The reigning world champion waited until the final moments of Q3 to produce a 1m31.824s lap, edging Antonelli’s benchmark and securing his third pole of the season.

The championship leader had appeared on course to take the top spot after setting a 1m31.835s, but Norris found the crucial margin where it mattered most.

The result sets up another intriguing chapter in the 2026 title fight, with Antonelli starting directly alongside his closest championship rival.

Norris finds the final fraction

The inaugural qualifying session around the 5.4km Madring had threatened to become a survival test, given the circuit’s combination of tight street sections, high-speed corners and limited runoff.

Instead, the session passed without any major interruption, allowing the leading contenders to settle their differences on track.

Lewis Hamilton initially established the Q3 benchmark at 1m32.079s, ahead of Antonelli, George Russell and Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc. Max Verstappen had also looked increasingly dangerous as Red Bull recovered from a difficult Friday, although the Dutchman lost time after a mistake on his opening Q3 flyer.

Antonelli then delivered what looked like a pole-worthy lap, taking three tenths from Hamilton. Norris had other ideas.

The McLaren driver’s final attempt was not entirely tidy, with Norris drifting wide on the exit of the final corner. But the lap was still fast enough to topple Antonelli by the narrowest of margins.

Verstappen completed the top three in a welcome resurgence for Red Bull, followed by Hamilton and Leclerc. Russell could only manage sixth, with Oscar Piastri seventh.

Liam Lawson, Franco Colapinto and Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10.

Colapinto and Lindblad shine

The midfield produced plenty of intrigue, particularly as the new Madring offered little previous form to guide the teams.

Colapinto recovered impressively after a huge moment through the heavily banked Monumental section, where the rear of his Alpine stepped out at high speed. The Argentine regrouped to grab eighth and reach Q3, while Lindblad also progressed into the final segment.

Nico Hulkenberg had briefly occupied a Q3 position in the early stages of Q2 but ultimately missed out, as Lindblad became the other midfield standout to break through.

Ocon qualified 13th for Haas, ahead of Gasly, Tsunoda and Albon. Gasly was particularly frustrated after finding his Alpine dramatically different from the car he had driven in FP3.

Russell had led Q1, beating Antonelli by 0.056s despite brushing the wall. Red Bull again showed strong pace, with Lawson third and Verstappen fourth on the medium tyre, while Ferrari’s Hamilton and Leclerc also advanced comfortably.

Williams once again found itself fighting for survival. Albon edged Carlos Sainz by just 0.005s for 16th, leaving Sainz as the highest-placed Spanish driver after Fernando Alonso could manage only 18th.

Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas occupied the final two spots, with Bottas unable to complete a clean lap after being impeded by Sainz.

Neither Haas’ Oliver Bearman nor Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll set a qualifying time. Bearman’s heavy FP3 crash left Haas unable to repair his car in time, while Stroll suffered a suspected water-pressure problem.

Both are therefore set for starts at the back of the field, with Stroll already facing a grid penalty for exceeding his Honda power unit allocation.
