Russell reveals what derailed his Madring Q3 charge

George Russell will start only sixth at the Spanish Grand Prix, a frustrating outcome after the Mercedes driver had looked like a serious pole contender in the early stages of qualifying.

Russell topped Q1 around Madrid’s demanding new Madring circuit, but the advantage rapidly evaporated. By Q2 and Q3, he was consistently around three tenths adrift of teammate Kimi Antonelli, who secured second on the grid behind poleman Lando Norris.

For Russell, however, the deficit was less about a fundamental lack of Mercedes pace and more about a combination of tyre behaviour, setup changes and the unforgiving nature of the new circuit.

Madring’s narrow line between speed and trouble

Russell had brushed the wall with his front-left tyre during Q1, immediately raising the possibility that the contact had compromised his car. But the Briton dismissed that theory, pointing instead to a mistake during his final flying lap.

“I don't think so, because my following lap in Q1 we were quicker,” the Briton told Sky Sports F1.

He subsequently explained that the car remained unharmed, leaving him to focus on extracting the maximum from the tyres when it mattered.

“Obviously, I was slightly concerned in the moment, but the car was fine. I went out on top of the session afterwards and then felt in the mix thereafter,” he said.

“But just the last lap, I was about three tenths up, tried pushing hard in Turn 11, the tyres couldn’t take it, and then [I] lost all the lap time thereafter. So that was a bit annoying.”

The Madring’s relentless combination of fast corners and close walls leaves little room for over-driving, and Russell admitted that finding the right threshold proved particularly difficult.

“It's a really tough circuit,” he also told Sky. “You almost need to drive a little bit below the limit, then extract that last little bit, and that cost me today.”

Mercedes still searching for the sweet spot

There was another layer to Russell’s qualifying struggles. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff revealed that the team had been experimenting with the car right up until qualifying, while an unexpected rear-axle issue further complicated matters.

“In qualifying, the rear axle was overheating, on top of everything,” Wolff told Austrian broadcaster ORF. “That wasn't the case before.

“He also took some front wing off before the session, then put it back in during the session. And then you don't really know what to expect from the car.

“Normally, on street circuits, you need to drive lap after lap to get closer to the walls. Changing the set-up obviously doesn't help with that.”

Russell now faces a potentially important recovery drive. Already 66 points behind Antonelli in the championship, he cannot afford to watch his teammate disappear into the distance from the front row.

Yet qualifying may not tell the full story at the Madring. Russell believes Sunday’s tyre behaviour could completely reshape the order.

“I think tyre deg is going to define it one way or another,” he told Sky.

“It will either be no deg, and there will be a procession, or there will be really high deg, and it will be pretty chaotic. So that's for sure going to be the big moment.”
