Norris’ cola clash – tells F1 ‘I’m allowed to drink what I want’

Lando Norris lost out on a victory at the Madring thanks to a perfectly miserable Virtual Safety Car, but he secured an indisputable cultural win before he even stepped onto the podium.

The McLaren driver had just watched victory slip away in the Spanish Grand Prix after an ill-timed VSC wrecked what should have been a cheap pit-stop opportunity, leaving Norris to settle for third behind Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen.

So when an official in the cooldown room apparently took issue with the McLaren driver enjoying a can of Coca-Cola before heading to the podium celebration, Norris was hardly inclined to add brand diplomacy to his list of post-race concerns.

Formula 1 operates under the supreme law of corporate optics, and rival beverage giant PepsiCo happens to be an official commercial partner of the sport.

Norris, sitting between race winner Antonelli and Verstappen, initially appeared to realise that his perfectly innocent refreshment might somehow have become a corporate matter.

“I might get told off,” he admitted to Antonelli.

Whatever was said to him off camera apparently failed to persuade the Briton that he had committed some kind of fizzy-drink offence. His response was delivered with a smile, but the message was about as subtle as opening a can with a hammer.

"I just did a race, so I'm allowed to drink what I would like. Thank you so much,” the 28-year-old Briton responded, while the official was left to contemplate the futility of micromanaging a dehydrated driver.

Norris wins the internet

It took mere seconds for the clip to escape into the wild web, where fans weary of F1’s sanitized press officers and corporate stiffness immediately elevated Norris to folk-hero status.

"THIS is the highlight of the Madring," one fan wrote on Reddit, while another neatly identified the unintended marketing disaster: "The irony is their attempt to stop him has brought so many more eyes on this."

Others enjoyed the sight of Norris apparently becoming less interested in corporate etiquette and more comfortable with simply saying what he thought.

"Love this version of Lando. Kimi learning media from Max and Lando will be hilarious," someone else posted, while another offered a prediction that could make Formula 1's commercial department particularly nervous:

"Max will be turning up with a six-pack of Red Bull next race. I like this Lando."

Ultimately, the fan base felt Norris had earned every single fluid ounce of his chosen carbonated caffeine hit, regardless of whose logo was printed on the trackside hoardings.

As one final fan bluntly put it: "Valid reaction, after getting f***ed like that in that DAMNED race."
