Alpine brings former Mercedes CTO back to Enstone

Alpine has turned to a familiar face to strengthen the technical leadership of its Formula 1 operation, bringing former Mercedes chief technical officer Mike Elliott back to Enstone in a significant new appointment.

The 52-year-old Briton returns to the factory where his F1 career once took an important step, taking on the role of CTO and assuming responsibility for Alpine’s technical and engineering departments.

It is a reunion with a place Elliott already knows well. He spent four years at Enstone between 2008 and 2012 as the team’s principal aerodynamicist, before embarking on a hugely successful chapter with Mercedes.

A distinguished career with Mercedes

Elliott's second spell with the Renault-owned team comes after an F1 career spanning some 23 years and three major teams, including Renault, McLaren and Mercedes.

His time with the Silver Arrows was particularly decorated. Across an 11-year stint, Elliott occupied a series of increasingly influential technical positions, first heading up aerodynamics before becoming technology director and eventually taking the CTO position.

He was a key member of the design team behind Mercedes' extraordinary run of eight consecutive constructors' championships between 2014 and 2021, when the German manufacturer established an era of dominance that reshaped the modern F1 landscape.

But Elliott's Mercedes story also coincided with one of the team's most difficult technical chapters.

Following the introduction of ground-effect regulations in 2022, Mercedes struggled to reproduce the performance that had made it virtually untouchable under the previous rules. The team committed to its radical 'zero-pod' concept, a design philosophy that ultimately failed to deliver the expected gains.

Mercedes eventually abandoned the concept, but the recovery was painfully slow. The team went winless throughout the 2023 season, while Elliott moved into the CTO position as part of a restructuring that brought James Allison back into the technical director role.

Elliott departed Mercedes towards the end of that year.

A reunion with a very different Alpine

Now he returns to Enstone with Alpine, taking charge of a technical operation that will be hoping his experience at both ends of Mercedes' remarkable rise can prove valuable.

His arrival also comes at an interesting moment for Alpine. The team entered 2026 with Mercedes power units following the end of its own Renault works engine programme, creating a direct technical link between Elliott's former employer and his new home.

After 16 rounds of the current championship, Alpine occupies sixth place in the constructors' standings with 68 points, nine behind Racing Bulls in fifth.

Elliott therefore arrives with plenty of work ahead of him, but also with an unusually intimate understanding of the factory he is now being asked to lead.

Nearly a quarter of a century into his F1 career, the British engineer has returned to where part of the journey began – only this time, rather than trying to make Enstone's cars faster from the aerodynamics department, he has been handed responsibility for helping coordinate the entire technical operation.
