Ocon now a ‘free agent’ as Haas weighs its options for 2027

Esteban Ocon has effectively put himself on the Formula 1 market for 2027, admitting he is now a “free agent” as Haas continues to keep its options open over who will partner Ollie Bearman next season.

The Frenchman’s situation is becoming increasingly intriguing. While his recent performances have strengthened his case to remain on the grid, Haas has yet to commit to its current pairing, leaving Ocon facing an uncertain future just as his form appears to be moving in the right direction.

"I am at the moment definitely a free agent for next year," Ocon stated ahead of this weekend’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

That leaves the door open to a potentially awkward few months for the 29-year-old. Ocon is still driving for Haas, but the team has been actively evaluating alternatives through its testing of previous cars programme.

Ferrari junior Rafael Camara, reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli and reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa have all featured in the discussion, while team boss Ayao Komatsu previously indicated that "maybe five" drivers remained under consideration.

Recent speculation has pointed towards Camara emerging as a candidate for the seat, although Haas has made no final announcement.

Ocon keeps Haas door open

For the 30-year-old Frenchman, the uncertainty is clearly not of his making. He says discussions are taking place around his future, but some of the factors determining the outcome are beyond his control.

"There are things in discussion that are out of my control and there are certain topics that are out of my control. So I will keep pushing until the end of the year and see how it goes,” he said.

Asked directly whether remaining with Haas was still an option, Ocon offered little more than two words: “Let's see".

That ambiguity is particularly striking given the way he has responded to a difficult season. Haas enjoyed a productive start to the campaign, scoring points regularly, before its competitiveness faded and persistent car problems began to undermine its results.

Ocon believes his own contribution has remained consistent despite those difficulties.

"We know it's been an ongoing issue," he said. "It's reassuring that I'm doing a good job. Obviously, my performance hasn't been an issue this year.

"I've performed every time I had the car. I've been the last one to score in Monaco. I was almost scoring in Madrid. There's been a lot of times where I've performed when the car was underperforming. It's been clear.

"Everybody in the team has been following that very closely, trying to fix the problem. We haven't been hiding from it. But it's been quite disappointing at times, obviously, to have these kind of problems."

Bearman ready if Ocon moves on

The backdrop makes the situation even more interesting. Haas is not simply waiting to see whether Ocon wants to stay; it is actively gathering information on potential replacements while Bearman appears increasingly established as one half of its future equation.

Bearman, meanwhile, has acknowledged just how much he has learned from his experienced teammate since joining the team.

"I've been here for, well, this is my second year driving as a full-time driver, but also I've been one year as a reserve for Haas, also did a few races and FP1s the year before that, even in 2023, I did my first FP1. So I have a really good level of experience with the team," he explained.

"I feel like I've improved a lot in terms of my on-track performance, but also how I describe what I'm feeling in the car and things like that. And that's something I certainly learned a lot from someone who's very experienced like Esteban.

“So on that side, it's been really good learning for me.

"Even if I compare my feedback to 12 months ago, I'm not sure I would have the confidence to just rely on my own feedback. But I feel like I've made a good step in that regard, and it's just a normal learning process, really."

For now, Ocon remains in the Haas cockpit. But with the team assessing alternatives and the driver himself confirming his free-agent status, the Frenchman is heading towards the final stretch of the season with his 2027 future conspicuously unresolved.

And that could make every strong performance from here to the chequered flag rather more significant.
