Horner fires up Ferrari speculation: ‘It’s the dream’

Christian Horner has spent more than a year away from Formula 1, but the former Red Bull boss is serious about returning, and has just revealed the one team that could tempt him back without the ownership stake he previously insisted was essential: Ferrari!

Speaking in an interview with The Times, Horner has suddenly injected fresh intrigue into the speculation surrounding his next move, with the 52-year-old making no secret of the fact that the Maranello outfit occupies a unique place in his F1 ambitions.

After two decades at the helm of Red Bull, the Briton was removed from his team principal and CEO roles shortly after the 2025 British Grand Prix.

Since then, his name has continued to circulate around the paddock, with Alpine, Aston Martin and Ferrari among the teams linked to the former Red Bull chief, while speculation has also connected him with prospective new entrants.

Horner had previously made clear that he wasn't interested in simply returning as another team's hired hand. Ferrari, however, appears to represent an exception and a rather different proposition.

Ferrari: the one exception?

Horner's message is particularly intriguing given the criticism surrounding Ferrari's 2026 campaign which has led to renewed speculation regarding team principal Fred Vasseur's future.

Asked by The Times whether he could envisage returning to F1, Horner explained why his priorities have changed after spending so long in charge of Red Bull.

“I’ve been a hired hand. I did 21 years sitting on the pit wall. I don’t need to go back to that,” he said. “At this stage in my life, there’s only one team for which I would accept non-participation in ownership.

“Would I consider Ferrari? I mean, Ferrari is the biggest brand in Formula 1. It’s the dream. And arguably it’s the sleeping giant of Formula 1.”

That is quite an invitation to read between the lines.

Horner isn't saying Ferrari has offered him a role, nor is he confirming that talks have taken place. But by explicitly identifying the Scuderia as the sole exception to his ownership requirement, he has given the paddock plenty of material to speculate about.

And the 52-year-old F1 veteran appears perfectly happy to let the speculation run.

“I think the fact that, 14 months out of the sport, they’re still talking about me shows that there’s still a demand. Perhaps I wasn’t that unpopular,” Horner added.

Horner isn't ready to sit quietly

There is also little indication that Horner has become particularly enamoured with retirement. Asked whether he could find himself back on the F1 grid next year, his answer was typically cryptic.

“I don’t know. I’m the cure and the problem,” he said. “There comes a point in time where a team’s competitiveness outweighs other egotistical stuff,” Horner said.

“I’m in a very fortunate position that I can afford to be picky. If I don’t do anything, I can live here for whatever time I’ve got left on the planet, and just worry about whether it’s going to rain and make the grass green or not.

“But is that going to fulfil me? No. I still feel that there’s another dance. And Toto needs to have his hair f***ing ruffled up.

“He’s having it easy while I’m not there. So why would he want me back? I’m probably going to give him a harder time than anybody else.”

The prospect of Horner returning to the F1 paddock therefore remains exactly that – a prospect. But Ferrari has now been singled out by the man himself as the one team capable of breaking his own rule.

And with the Scuderia's current leadership the subject of intense scrutiny, Horner has just added considerably more fuel to an intriguing fire.
