Sainz hit with five-place grid penalty after Baku breach

Carlos Sainz’s promising qualifying effort in Baku has been dented by a five-place grid penalty after the Williams driver was found guilty of failing to slow sufficiently for yellow flags.

Sainz had hauled Williams’ heavily revised FW48 into Q3 and secured ninth on the grid, only for his lap to come under investigation after Lando Norris ran off track ahead of him.

Following a hearing involving Sainz and a Williams representative, the stewards concluded that the Spaniard had not reacted appropriately to the yellow flags displayed after Turn 2 and approaching Turn 3.

Stewards reject Sainz’s ‘global lift’

The stewards noted that yellow flags were clearly visible and that Sainz had also received a radio warning from his team: “Yellow ahead, lift”.

Sainz acknowledged that he was aware of the yellow flags but argued that he intended to demonstrate a reduction in speed across the affected area as a whole. He did not believe it was necessary to slow on the straight, expecting instead to show the required response around Turn 3.

The stewards rejected that interpretation, stressing that a driver must demonstrate a significant reduction in speed in each individual marshalling sector affected by yellow flags.

Telemetry showed that Sainz reacted only in the second sector. In the preceding sector, the stewards found no meaningful reduction in speed attributable to the yellow flags, with Sainz actually recording his fastest time of the session there.

“The stewards therefore did not accept that the subsequent lift in Marshalling Sector 5 constituted a sufficient ‘global’ response covering both sectors,” the decision stated.

They concluded that Sainz had failed to sufficiently reduce speed under the yellow flag in Sector 4, triggering the standard five-place penalty for a qualifying infringement.

Sainz drops to P14

The sanction moves Sainz from ninth to 14th on the grid, promoting Franco Colapinto, Ollie Bearman, Liam Lawson, Alex Albon and Esteban Ocon.

Sainz also receives two penalty points, taking his total to four over the preceding 12 months.

The penalty is an unfortunate blow after Sainz had reported encouraging progress with Williams’ latest upgrade package on Friday. The team had introduced a lighter chassis and revised aerodynamics in Baku as it attempts to recover ground after a difficult first half of the season.

Perez also penalised

Sainz was not the only driver to receive a grid penalty after qualifying.

Cadillac’s Sergio Perez was handed a three-place drop for impeding Oscar Piastri during Q1. Perez was on a preparation lap on Baku’s long straight when Piastri approached at significantly greater speed and was forced to lift.

The stewards judged the incident not to have been particularly dangerous but ruled that Perez had impeded Piastri and failed to follow race director Rui Marques’ explicit instruction to remain on the extreme left of the track.

Perez therefore drops from his original 20th position. However, with Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll carrying larger engine-related penalties, the Mexican is still expected to start from P20.
