Alonso reportedly set for sensational Dakar return in 2027

Fernando Alonso isn’t one to settle for a quiet off-season. Just when paddock observers thought the two-time Formula 1 World Champion might spend his winter relaxing, the Spanish icon is preparing to swap glass-smooth tarmac for towering sand dunes.

A report this week from Spanish website SoyMotor.com says that Alonso has agreed to make a sensational return to the legendary Dakar Rally, taking on the world’s ultimate wilderness endurance test in Saudi Arabia behind the wheel of an Aston Martin-bodied T1+ monster built by Prodrive.

The news may have been what Alonso was alluding to last weekend in Malaysia.

“Perhaps there will be more surprises in the coming weeks,” he told reporters. “There are things that people probably think are impossible, but I want to find the limits of what is possible.”

Re-engineering a champion

According to reports, the foundational vehicle for this audacious bid is a proven performer – the Prodrive-built machine that previously ran under the Dacia Sandrider banner and claimed victory at the 2026 Dakar.

The vehicles are currently stationed in the UK undergoing transformation, with custom Aston Martin bodywork moulds being prepared to give the rally machine a distinctive British pedigree.

Testing is apparently slated to begin as early as next week. While the initial test chassis won't yet sport the final sculpted Aston Martin panels, veteran Dakar engineer Daniel Gratacós – fresh off working alongside Dakar winner Nasser Al-Attiyah – is set to oversee the car’s early running.

Reuniting in the cockpit alongside Alonso will be five-time Dakar motorcycle winner Marc Coma. The Spanish duo previously tackled the dunes together in 2020, delivering a solid 13th-place finish during Alonso’s Dakar debut in a Toyota Hilux.

Rejoining forces gives Alonso a trusted navigator in the passenger seat as they prepare to take on the desert once more.

A deeper desert challenge

When Alonso first ventured into the desert six years ago, he showed flashes of brilliant pace. But his comeback lands in a vastly transformed landscape.

The premier T1+ class has exploded in competitiveness, boasting up to 50 elite, fire-breathing entries packed with seasoned rally specialists.

Though final signatures on the contract are still being formalized, the foundation is laid.

Leveraging the storied two-decade partnership between Aston Martin and David Richards’ Prodrive operation, Alonso is poised to embark on one of the most thrilling dual-campaigns in modern motorsport history.

The two-time F1 world champion and Le Mans winner isn't just pushing his own limits – he's redefining what a modern racing driver can accomplish. Vamos!
