Singapore GP: Verstappen stuns to snatch Sprint Qualifying pole

Max Verstappen produced a blistering final lap to snatch pole for Saturday's Sprint event at the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix, denying Ferrari and McLaren a front-row lockout as George Russell delivered a late charge to secure second.

The Red Bull driver clocked a 1m31.156s in the closing moments of SQ3 to beat Russell and claim his first qualifying-session triumph at Marina Bay, although he faces a post-session investigation over an alleged yellow-flag infringement.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, meanwhile, could manage only seventh, trailing the leading Ferraris and McLarens as Mercedes' pace proved insufficient to challenge for the top spots.

Perez crash throws SQ1 into chaos

Sprint qualifying got off to a chaotic start when Sergio Perez crashed into the Tecpro barriers at Turn 5 before anyone had recorded a time. The resulting damage left debris, including his front wing, on the racing line, prompting a red flag.

With just six minutes remaining when the session resumed, drivers scrambled to get out and secure a representative lap, creating a frantic queue in the pitlane.

Verstappen eventually set the pace with a 1m33.477s, edging Charles Leclerc by just 0.018s and Russell by 0.096s. Lewis Hamilton was fourth, 0.271s off the benchmark, while Nico Hulkenberg impressed for Audi in fifth.

Antonelli could do no better than ninth, behind Isack Hadjar, Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Carlos Sainz endured a miserable session, complaining of front locking and a lack of rear grip as he was eliminated alongside Williams team-mate Alexander Albon, both Cadillacs, Lance Stroll and Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad. The latter missed the cut by a tenth amid confusion caused by an FIA software glitch.

Ferrari and McLaren strike back

Verstappen initially raised the bar in SQ2 with a 1m32.724s, but Ferrari and McLaren soon found an answer. Leclerc took over at the top with a 1m32.457s, ahead of Hamilton and Norris.

Russell and Antonelli were six-tenths and nine-tenths off Leclerc respectively, leaving Mercedes with work to do. Russell's second attempt was compromised by a lock-up at Turn 13, but he recovered sufficiently to reach SQ3.

Hadjar and Franco Colapinto also improved late on, sending the latter out of contention. Colapinto missed the cut by 0.094s to Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly, while Hulkenberg was also eliminated after failing to improve.

Verstappen delivers when it matters

The switch to soft tyres for the eight-minute SQ3 shootout initially favoured McLaren, with Norris setting a 1m31.587s to lead Piastri, Russell and Antonelli.

Leclerc edged Norris by 0.019s before improving to 1m31.399s on his final attempt. But Verstappen had the decisive answer, producing a stunning lap nearly a quarter of a second quicker than the Ferrari.

Russell secured second in the dying moments, splitting Verstappen from the chasing pack. Leclerc took third ahead of Piastri, Norris and Hamilton.

Antonelli finished seventh, 0.693s behind Verstappen, with Liam Lawson, Hadjar and Gasly completing the top 10.

Verstappen has finally conquered a qualifying session at Marina Bay, but the potential yellow-flag investigation means his Singapore breakthrough may yet come with an asterisk.
