Mercedes reaches for the stars with astronaut team ambassador

Mercedes has found a new way to reach for the stars, recruiting one of the men who recently ventured farther from Earth than any human before him.

The Brackley squad has appointed Reid Wiseman, NASA astronaut, US Navy Captain and commander of the historic Artemis II lunar mission, as an official team Ambassador ahead of this weekend’s United States Grand Prix in Austin.

It is a rather different kind of recruitment for a Formula 1 team, although Mercedes clearly believes that experience navigating the vastness of space has plenty to offer a sport obsessed with finding the smallest possible margins of performance.

Wiseman commanded Artemis II, NASA’s crewed journey around the Moon earlier this year, marking humanity’s first manned lunar flyby in more than half a century.

The mission also broke the distance record for human spaceflight, surpassing the previous benchmark set by Apollo 13.

Now, rather than helping steer a spacecraft through the void, Wiseman will bring his experience to Mercedes, working with its employees, partners, stakeholders and guests to showcase the innovation and high-performance culture behind the team.

From lunar orbit to the Mercedes garage

The appointment builds on a relationship Wiseman has developed with Mercedes over recent seasons. And for the astronaut, the move makes perfect sense: while the machinery might differ considerably, the principles behind success are remarkably familiar.

“I've always been struck by how much Formula 1 and space exploration have in common,” he said. “In both worlds, success is never about one individual.

“It is built by talented teams solving difficult problems, preparing relentlessly, and trusting one another when the pressure is at its highest.

"I've been fortunate to spend time with the Mercedes F1 Team in recent seasons and have seen first-hand the culture, innovation, and determination that drives its success.

“Becoming an ambassador feels like a natural next step in a relationship that has already become very meaningful to me.

“I'm excited to work with the team and help tell the story of the people, technology, and mindset behind what they achieve.”

For Mercedes, the partnership offers more than an eye-catching name to add to its guest list.

Wiseman's experience leading a mission involving extraordinary technical complexity and considerable risk provides a compelling perspective on teamwork under pressure – something F1 teams know all too well when championship ambitions hinge on decisions made in fractions of a second.

Mercedes finds a new source of inspiration

Mercedes chief commercial officer Richard Sanders made clear that the appointment was rooted in a relationship that had already grown beyond a conventional business arrangement.

“Over the past few years, Reid has become a genuine friend of our team,” Sanders explained.

“Every conversation leaves you inspired, not just because of where he has been, but because of how he thinks and leads.

“There are remarkable similarities between F1 and human spaceflight.

“Both require brilliant people working together, absolute trust in those around you, and the courage to push into the unknown.

“What Reid achieved as commander of Artemis II captured the imagination of millions around the world.

“We are delighted to welcome him as an ambassador and look forward to sharing his experiences, insights, and perspective with our partners, our team members, and our wider community.”

Mercedes has spent years chasing marginal gains on Earth, so there is a certain appeal in recruiting someone whose recent achievements involved pushing the boundaries of human exploration.

Whether Wiseman can help the Silver Arrows find their own stellar trajectory remains to be seen.

But with a man who has commanded a voyage around the Moon now in its corner, Mercedes certainly has an ambassador who knows a thing or two about aiming high.
