Norris admits ‘very bad job’ as McLaren’s pace goes to waste

Lando Norris emerged from Saturday’s qualifying at the Circuit of the Americas convinced that McLaren had handed him a car capable of challenging for the front row – and furious that he had failed to deliver the result.

The reigning world champion will line up eighth on Sunday at the US Grand Prix a position that falls well short of what he believed was achievable.

Norris’ frustration was compounded by a second Q3 lap that briefly lifted him to sixth before track limits at Turn 19 erased the effort, leaving him stranded with the eighth-fastest time from his opening run.

After the session, the Briton was in no mood to hide behind the limitations of the MCL40. Although he described the car as brutally difficult to handle, he insisted its underlying speed should have been enough for second place.

In his eyes, the gap between what McLaren could achieve and what he actually delivered was painfully large.

“The car was very strong today in terms of pace,” he said. “Insanely difficult to drive.

“Probably the hardest car I've ever had to drive in my life. But good enough for P2, so I should be P2 and I'm P8, so clearly, I did a very bad job today.”

A car that punishes every mistake

Norris had topped Q1, offering an early indication that McLaren possessed genuine pace in Austin.

But the promise evaporated as qualifying progressed, with the Briton ultimately finishing more than a second behind pole-sitter Kimi Antonelli and 0.835 seconds adrift of Max Verstappen in second.

The MCL40's weaknesses were particularly exposed through the slower corners and final sector, where extracting a clean lap proved an increasingly miserable exercise. McLaren has also struggled to match the development progress of its rivals, having gone three consecutive grands prix without a podium.

Yet Norris remained convinced that Sunday's race could offer an opportunity to salvage something from a frustrating weekend.

“The car was quick, it's just nasty to drive,” added Norris. “I saw a good result, it's possible. I think I still have faith that we can get a good result tomorrow.

“I don't know how easy it's going to be to overtake and things like that. But, for a lot of the track, we seem on par.

“We struggle a lot in sector three and there's very slow speed. We're pretty dreadful, honestly. But tomorrow is a new day.”

The timing of the disappointment will sting McLaren. The team brought the first instalment of its final upgrade package of the season to Texas, including revised front suspension geometry and an altered diffuser profile, hoping to narrow the gap to its competitors.

“We try and improve it every time,” said Norris. “We improve the car, we bring upgrades.

“But it's something we're not completely... I don't know, it might be that the car is just not quick enough and therefore there's always hope that I can do a mega lap and I can be P1.

“But you improve three corners and the other three are a nightmare all of a sudden. It's just impossible. It's an impossible car to achieve the perfection that I want to achieve at the minute.

“Which is a struggle, because I want to go for pole, and I need to tell myself to settle for a P5, and I don't want to do that.”

Piastri shares the pain

Oscar Piastri's seventh place leaves both McLaren drivers on the fourth row for Sunday's race. The Australian also struggled to find the performance he expected from the package, suggesting the team's difficulties extend beyond Norris's individual qualifying errors.

“I’ve not been anywhere near as competitive as what I wanted to be,” he said.

“That’s P7. We obviously wanted more from today. Overall, it has been a difficult weekend. The car has the potential to be quick, it’s just been hard to drive and we haven’t had the pace,” he lamented, echoing his teamate’s comments.

“We’ll keep working because there’s speed in the package – we just haven’t unlocked it yet. The focus now is on understanding how we can push the car further and extract the most out of tomorrow.

“If we can get ahead at the start, I think we can keep the on-track position, so let’s see what we can do.”

For McLaren, the immediate challenge is to turn that elusive potential into something tangible on Sunday.

Norris still believes a strong result is within reach, but his qualifying verdict exposed a deeper frustration: a car that can occasionally flash front-running speed yet makes consistency feel like an impossible demand.
