'If Cows Could Fly': Bottas laughs off Cadillac contract rumors

If there is one thing Valtteri Bottas knows after more than a decade in Formula 1, it is that a driver’s contract is often only as solid as the ink used to sign it.

But as the paddock rumor mill shifts into high gear over his seat at Cadillac, the Finnish driver remains cool, unbothered, and entirely unmoved by the whispers threatening to cut his tenure short.

Speculation has hit fever pitch following a string of underwhelming qualifying and race performances from Bottas. With Esteban Ocon left looking for a seat after losing his Haas drive to F2 leader Rafael Camara, the Frenchman's name has naturally been linked to the fresh American squad.

Throw Cadillac test driver Colton Herta into the mix, despite a rocky F2 campaign, and Bottas suddenly finds himself in the crosshairs of driver market feeding frenzies.

Budkowski plays his cards close

Adding fuel to the fire, recently appointed Cadillac team principal Marcin Budkowski did little to quell the flames during Friday’s press conference at the United States Grand Prix.

When quizzed on whether Ocon or other available talent were knocking on the door, Budkowski offered an intentionally elusive response.

“There are a number of drivers and managers who have contacted me. I’m not going to say who it is or who it isn’t, but pretty much all of them that are on the market have been in touch, as you’d expect,” he said.

Pressed further on whether Bottas and teammate Sergio Perez actually possessed airtight race seats for 2027 under their multi-year deals, the Cady boss dodged the question entirely.

“This is the last place I would comment on driver contracts, and in general, I think it’s not something that is done in the press. It’s something which will be done by official releases from the team when the time is right,” he insisted.

Bottas unfazed by the speculation

Despite Budkowski's cryptically evasive stance and the vague performance clauses that typically govern F1 extensions, Bottas claims to be completely out of the loop regarding his boss's press conference comments – and entirely unconcerned.

When asked directly if the team had provided him with assurances for 2027, the 10-time Grand Prix winner pointed firmly to the ink on his original contract.

“Yes – I mean, last year when I signed, I know the terms, so that's all OK,” he said.

As for the existential threat of Formula 1’s volatile game of musical chairs breaking up his contract before 2027 rolls around, Bottas served up a classic dose of pragmatic Finnish humor.

“I mean, it is Formula 1,” he said. “If cows could fly, you know… anything can always happen in this sport. But for now, they seem happy with what they're getting out of me. I think that's all that matters.”
