FE's next-gen contender: the future of Formula 1?

Formula E has provided a glimpse of its future development with the release by Spark Racing Technologies of images of its next generation FE contender.

Part-owned by former Renault team principal Frederic Vasseur, Spark has won the tender to supply the series next specification chassis.

It is understood that the current renderings offer just a basic idea of the car's general concept, which will apparently include a faired-wheel approach as well as an aeroscreen cockpit safety device similar what Red Bull tested in F1 last year.

Could this prefigure the future of single-seater racing and F1 in particular?

With the FIA working closely with Spark and its technical partner Dallara, the governing body has put the emphasis of development on autonomy rather than speed in order to do away with the mid-race car swaps currently associated with Formula E.

The incorporation of new materials is expected to lead to a weight gain of approximately 40kg, a necessary benefit in light of the more advanced but heavier battery supplied by McLaren Applied Technologies.

Aerodynamics are also at the center of the designer's attention with increased efficiency and a tightly packaged bodywork.

Teams will be issued more details at next weekend's Buenos Airies ePrix while a formal presentation of the car is expected before the end of the current season.
