Hulkenberg: 'An exciting day with my new family!'

Renault and Nico Hulkenberg enjoyed a reliable and consistent on the opening day of pre-season testing in Barcelona.

The French team didn't quite get as many laps as it wanted however following an issue with the front brake ducts of its R.S.17 which slightly shortened its programmed track time.

But Hulkenberg, who looked like a somewhat negative 'Stig' as he donned an immaculate black helmet with a dark visor, sampled only the medium tyre compound, was happy with his day at the office.

"It was an exciting first day with a new team and a completely different type of Formula 1 car," said the German.

"It feels very different out on track with a lot of new aspects to discover as we're at the start of a steep learning curve.

"The car certainly feels faster than those to the previous regulations and it is fun to drive. You certainly realise you've got more downforce in the corners.

"It wasn't the most trouble-free day, but it's been a good start in my new home."

Phillip van Osten

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
