Born in Avignon, a stone's throw from the Circuit Paul Ricard, Jean Alesi put himself on the map for his maiden Formula 1 race which took place on this day in 1989.
The 25-year-old was recruited mid-season by Ken Tyrrell and entrusted with a race at the French Grand Prix. Alesi lined up 16th on the grid but was charging from the outset.
He actually made it all the way up to second half-way through the 80-lap race, running behind his idol Alain Prost. Eventually he settled for fourth however after being overhauled by Mansell's Ferrari and Patrese's Williams.
Still, it was a mighty impressive first time out for Alesi.
