The feisty Northern Irishman turns 50 on this day. Irvine's reputation as an enfant terrible did not prevent him from being pretty good at turning a wheel in anger. Indeed, he nearly won the 1999 world title against McLaren’s Mika Hakkinen after Ferrari team-mate and leader Michael Schumacher was sidelined for several months with a broken leg.
