Montreal inaugurates new Circuit Gilles Villeneuve pit complex

Formula 1 CEO Chase Carey was in Montreal on Wednesday for the inauguration of Montreal's new pit and paddock complex.

The overhaul of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve's main infrastructure was hit with a delay because of the harsh weather conditions that prevailed last winter.

"Winter set in very early in Quebec this year, with snow coming in November," race promoter François Dumontier told Le Journal de Montreal.

Just three weeks from the start of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend, parts of the main building have yet to be fully completed, with finishing touches expected to be undertaken even after next month's event.

"But it's nothing that will jeopardize the use of the garages," added Dumontier. "What you see looks worse than it really is."

Formula 1's boss was at least impressed with what he saw.

"This paddock fulfils all our criteria, it's spectacular!" said Carey.

"I didn't really know what to expect, but my expectations have been exceeded. This is a major asset for an event that is special on our calendar."

Phillip van Osten

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
