Dennis seals Formula E title in first London E-Prix

Avalanche Andretti's Jake Dennis finished runner up to Jaguar's Mitch Evans in Saturday's first round of racing in London's E-Prix, but that was good enough for him to become Britain's first Formula E World Champion.

To bring it home, Dennis survived a chaotic race that included missed trips through the Attack Mode loop, big pressure from his closest championship rival Nick Cassidy and a pair of red flags.

"Oh my God. That is incredible," said Dennis immediately after his triumph. "That race was so hard, everything thrown at us. World Champions, baby! I feel incredible, amazing.

"I felt like everyone was racing against us but Jesus Christ, we have just become World Champion and I am so so happy for myself, the team and everyone, we deserved it so much.

"I only joined the championship three years ago and we almost won it in our rookie year, but now to come back and properly have the year that we had, you know break all the podium records and to become World Champion, it’s just mind blowing.

"I really didn’t think it coming into this year and full credit to my boys - I love them so much and they've given me an absolute rocketship all year. And this is the least I can do for them.

"I can hear the fans as well and it's just absolutely incredible to share this with them, and my mum's out there somewhere too. World Champions - I am just amazed."

Dennis' title also marks the first championship won by Porsche's 99x electric drivetrain.

Phillip van Osten

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
