Former Formula One driver Bertrand Gachot is celebrating his 54th birthday on this date. He is pictured above driving the nimble Jordan 191 that he took to three top-six finishes in 1991.

Gachot’s biggest racing achievement came outside F1 though, with the Belgian ace securing victory at the 1991 Le Mans 24 Hours on the Mazda 787B with fellow F1 racer Johnny Herbert and German driver Volker Weidler.

The win is all the more remarkable in that it remains to this date the only success by a Japanese manufacturer in the French endurance classic.
