While he was the toast of free-practice, getting pole was not realistic for Max, despite the tight gaps. Shod on the hyper-softs, one could expect a cracker of a start to the race. But Bottas did the business holding onto second at turn one. Then it wasn’t until very late in the going that Verstappen closed up to the Mercedes, but could not make the move, despite posting the fastest lap of the race.
