Romain Grosjean (Retired, Lap 1): 7/10
Poor Romain Grosjean was just in the wrong place at the wrong time on Sunday, finding himself heading three-wide into turn 4 which left him vulnerable to being kicked into a spin by contact with Antonio Giovinazzi. There was no warning and nothing that he could have done in the situation, and we certainly haven't marked him down in this week's F1i ratings for his seventh retirement of the season. It does however make it harder for us to come up with any sort of reasonable determination of his true form in Sochi. There had been early encouraging signs in FP1 when he was tenth fastest but then he slipped to 16th in both of the remaining sessions. It was a surprise then to see Grosjean successfully make it through to the final round of qualifying while his Haas team mate Kevin Magnussen fell short. Magnussen actually went on to do rather well in the race, making it a shame that we'll never know what Grosjean might have been able to achieve if he hadn't been spun into the tyre wall on the first lap.
