Hamilton misses Wimbledon final due to dress code

Lewis Hamilton was forced to miss the Wimbledon men’s final on Sunday due to a “misunderstanding” over the dress code.

The double world champion was due to be present in the Royal Box for the showpiece final between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer on Sunday, saying on Instagram he was “honoured” to be invited. Wimbledon’s dress code for the Royal Box on Centre Court requires spectators to wear a jacket, tie and shoes. Hamilton, however, was wearing a bright floral shirt.

"Due to a misunderstanding over dress code, he is disappointed to have missed the final,” Hamilton’s spokesperson said.

Hamilton had already posted an image on Instagram when arriving at Wimbledon which showed him to be wearing a shirt and hat. "If [Hamilton] was not adequately dressed you could infer that he would not have been let in, but we do not comment on our guests,” a Wimbledon spokesman told the BBC. "If he came without a jacket, tie or shoes he would have had two choices - not staying or going to get some extra stuff.”
