Kubica targets more F1 testing and a 'proper comeback'

If there were ever any doubts about Robert Kubica's ambitions to race in F1 again, they were lifted by the Pole's public comments yesterday.

In a short exclusive Skype interview with Sky Sports F1, Kubica described his feelings and outlook following his test with Renault earlier this week in Valencia.

"To be honest, first of all I felt like a kid," Kubica said.

"It was  a special feeling for me, but on the other hand I got very quickly back what I had when I was racing in F1.

"The feeling was good and also it felt like being back at home.

"For sure, it's kind of a new start for me.  I don't know what it will bring but definitely it's a nice feeling to know that I can drive an F1 car after such a difficult period, and having my limitations to know that I can drive the car on good pace and for an entire Grand Prix distance."

One could sense Kubica's clear underlying motivation about returning to F1 racing, although he insisted that prospect was entirely dependent on himself.

"It's something which makes me happy and proud.

"For sure, once I have done this test I would like to test more but that doesn't depend only on my side.

"I will keep working and hopefully one day I'll have a chance to go forward and, step by step, maybe have a proper comeback."

Phillip van Osten

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
