This week's decision by the FIA decision to mandate the controversial 'halo' cockpit protection system for 2018 came as a bit of a surprise.

Talk about the 'halo' system had cooled in recent months. Last weekend in Silverstone saw a test run for an alternative concept, the shield. However that didn't go down very well at all with Sebastian Vettel, who gave up after saying it made him feel dizzy.

It's left the 'halo' as the only viable choice, but not everyone is entirely convinced. Reports say that only one team present at Wednesday's meeting of the Strategy Group fully supported the decision to finally roll it out. And Sky Sports F1 presenter Martin Brundle has dubbed it "plain ugly".

Now it's time to hear the verdict from the people who really matter - you, the fans. Let us know what you think about the halo: is the FIA right to insist on it on safety grounds? Or is it being rushed into service too soon? Or can you see it both ways and don't mind what happens?

Just click and vote below, and we'll report back on your verdict...
