Marko: 'If Kubica has what it takes then why not?'

Red Bull boss Helmut Marko sees no reason why Robert Kubica could not return to Formula 1 if he is up to the task.

After ramping up his comeback preparations with several private and closed-door outings at Valencia and Paul Ricard, Kubica was given full blown test with Renault and its 2017 car in Budapest two weeks ago.

The Pole not only acquitted himself well but dispelled any worries or dates about his physical ability to drive at the highest level.

So why wouldn't he come back, asks Marko?

"Before his accident, Kubica was one of the quickest drivers of his time," said the Red Bull boss.

"On top of that he had a successful time with Renault, and if they think that they can continue with that then it makes sense for them. I think it would be nice for Kubica to come back."

At 32-years-old, Kubica be considered closer to retirement than to a comeback compared to F1's current crop of teenage talent. But Marko disagrees.

"And that age thing: I think that Verstappen is the exception.

"Generally, you have to look at the personality of a driver – there are some, like Verstappen, who are ready in their teens while others need more time.

"If Kubica still has what it takes, then why not?"
