Haas' Magnussen ordered to rest after feeling ill

Kevin Magnussen was feeling under the weather yesterday in Mexico City, with the Dane complaining of a stomach ache.

The Haas driver was excused by the FIA for not attending the mandatory Friday drivers' briefing due to a "medical condition".

He was ordered by team boss Guenther Steiner to return back to the hotel but is expected to be up and running for Saturday's free practice and qualifying.

"I don't think it affected him too much," Steiner told Ekstra Bladet newspaper.

"I think there was a time when he had to leave the car because he needed something, but otherwise he was well enough.

"But we and (Magnussen's trainer) Thomas (Jorgensen) suggested that he should go back to the hotel instead of the driver meeting.

"He'll be fine," Steiner added.

"He was actually ok when he left, but my point of view was that he should not infect anyone else."

In the event that the Dane should not recover or feel fit enough, Haas would call upon reserve driver Antonio Giovinazzi, who ran with the team in yesterday's FP1 session.

Phillip van Osten

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
