Abt and Audi bag maiden Formula E win in Hong Kong

It was an electrical first for both Daniel Abt and the Audi works outfit in Hong Kong as the pair triumphed in the second race of the Formula E double-header weekend.

The win was gifted however by a pushing Edoardo Mortara who, after leading the majority of the race, ran wide and spun two laps from the checkered flag, ultimately falling back to third.

A lights failure forced the field to start behind the safety car, with Mortara gunning for the lead straight out of the box when poleman Felix Rosenqvist locked the rears heading in Turn 1 and spun.

Mortara progressively built himself a comfortable margin up until the mid-race car swap, with the Venturi driver smartly managing his battery energy.

Unchallenged, although Abt spared no effort to try and catch the Swiss, Mortara appeared to be on his way to an easy win when his enthusiasm got the better of him, losing it at Turn 2 as he pushed for fastest lap.

"I am gutted," said Mortara. "I was struggling with the brakes at the end. It was my fault. I wanted too much."

Abt was more than happy to accept his rival's unintended gift, taking top spoils on his 25th birthday and for the very first time since racing in Formula E.

Despite his first lap blunder which had sent him way down the order, Mahindra's Rosenqvist salvaged a runner-up spot on the podium thanks to a stunning recovery drive.

Behind Mortara, Mitch Evans, Jean-Eric Vergne and Saturday's winner Sam Bird completed the top five.
