Good Monaco showing put Williams back in its normal routine - Sirotkin

Sergey Sirotkin says Williams' performance in Monaco proved the team's dismal weekend in Spain was a one-off meltdown for the team.

The Russian rookie made it through to Q2 in qualifying in Monte Carlo where he lined up 12th on the grid only to be handed a stop/go penalty for a regulation infringement by the team.

Sirotkin's crew attached a wheel after the three-minute board had been brandished, a mishap which naturally wreaked havoc on the driver's chances of scoring points in the race.

The 22-year-old was still buoyed however by his qualifying run on Saturday and the speed of his FW41 which he said put Williams "back in our normal routine".

"It is a very positive trend," Sirotkin was quoted as saying by Motorsport.com.

"Barcelona was the one-off and I really wanted to prove that. I didn’t want that to upset our mentality and our motivation for all the work here and back at the factory.

"Now we can confirm that Barcelona was a one-off. We are there, we are fighting, which is good not just in terms of the result but also mentally for all of us," he added.

"I am happy we have proved it. I hope this result will please all the people working here and back at the factory, for whom it is a bit more difficult to see [progress on-track]."

Sirotkin out-performed team mate Lance Stroll who endured a miserable Sunday afternoon in Monaco, plagued by tyre punctures.

"It was a pretty terrible day," said the Canadian.

"After that I was busy letting cars through with blue flags as I was a lap down. Then we had temperature problems all race, and I was told to give gaps and let cars by, so there was not much of an opportunity and we just weren't racing."

Williams technical boss Paddy Lowe traced Stroll's puncture to an issue linked to excessive brake temperatures that overheated a wheel rim, causing a tyre failure.

"We failed to control that on the second set of tyres and he suffered another puncture," explained Lowe.

"The issue was managed for the rest of the race, but with so many pitstops and blue flags, Lance was in no position to make any progress."
