Formula 1's current championship format, which awards points to the top 10 at each race, could be extended in the future to include the first 15 finishers.

Liberty Media's potential plan was revealed by Force India's Vijay Mallya at Silverstone this week and is being considered as a means to help the sport's smaller outfits.

The proposal is being put to F1's Strategy Group, but Mallya believes that any point-reform should also be accompanied by a change to the teams' annual registration fee.

"We have to pay for each point the following year, so if the FIA wants to change something, they will also have to think about that," Mallya said.

Auto Motor und Sport reported that the point-spread from 2020 could be allocated on the basis of 25-20-18-16-14-12-10-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1.

However, Red Bull boss Christian Horner believes a points overhaul is a very secondary problem for a sport that currently has bigger issues to deal with.

"I think Formula 1 has far bigger problems to solve than the points system," he said.

He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing.
