Russell sees 'massive opportunity' for Williams in 2019

Williams' new recruit George Russell says he is "not worried" by the British outfit's dismal season and its depressed from, convinced that improvements lay on the 2019 horizon.

The 20-year-old Mercedes protégé is on the verge of winning the FIA Formula 2 championship, but will make his grand entry into F1 next March in Melbourne.

Williams' performance has slumped significantly this season, but Russell believes the winds of change will blow favourably on the Grove-based squad in the coming months.

"I'm not worried," Russell said. "Formula 1 changes so fast. Last year Williams was fifth in the constructors' world championship and two years before that were third.

"Next year is a massive opportunity and everyone is so motivated and hungry to improve."

Williams has yet to decide the identity of the driver that will be sitting opposite Russell in the team next season, but there is obviously no shortage of candidates.

From incumbent Sergey Sirotkin to Robert Kubica, Esteban Ocon and suppose contender Esteban Gutierrez, all have been linked with a seat at the team, although Sirotkin has a good chance of retaining his drive.

"I would be happy with anyone," Russell said, "but it would be good if they are a really a good driver to measure myself against.

"It's then important to build a good relationship with my teammate so that we can push the team forwards."
