Rosberg resurgence ‘too late’ – Ecclestone

Formula One commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone feels Nico Rosberg’s resurgence “comes a bit too late”.

The Mercedes driver dominated the entire Mexican Grand Prix weekend, securing the first hat trick of pole, win, and fastest lap in his career. But his strong all-around performance came one week after team-mate Lewis Hamilton claimed his third world title.

Rosberg’s convincing victory and current streak of four pole positions don’t mask the fact that his Briton rival has generally had the upper hand in 2015, with 10 wins and 11 poles to his name before the final two races of the season.

Speaking from Interlagos where he travelled after the Mexico event, Ecclestone wishes the German had emulated his 2014 self and taken the fight down to the wire.

“I do not mind if the title race is decided at an early stage because of Mercedes’ dominance,” the F1 boss is quoted as saying by Speed Week. “I just think that Rosberg could have done a better job this year.

“We saw it in Mexico, where he easily won the race. He will try to do it again here in Brazil, but unfortunately this all comes a bit too late.”

“In the 1980s, McLaren was perhaps even more dominant [than Mercedes now]. But at that time we had at least two drivers [Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost] who fought each other hard.”
