Nostalgic for a glorious 90s F1 sound? Listen to the Valkyrie's V12 engine

Up to now, Aston Martin's Valkyrie hypercar - designed by Red Bull's Adrian Newey - has been seen but never heard. But the company has released images and sounds of its fabulous V12 engine.

The Valkyrie is a ground-breaking design, the result of a close collaboration between Red Bull racing and Aston Martin that leaves nothing in reserve.

From its striking honed for performance aerodynamics to its all-carbon fiber bodywork, the Valkyrie's engineering puts it as close as possible to an F1 car.

As for the 'pièce de résistance' - the beast's engine, Aston Martin relies on a Cosworth-engineered V12 that delivers a staggering output of 1000 bhp!

However, by current F1 standards the engine may appear a bit, well, old school. But it's all for the better, with twelve cylinders, no turbocharger and a 6.5-litre displacement.

"To anyone with a drop of petrol in their blood, a high-revving naturally aspirated V12 is the absolute pinnacle," Aston Martin Lagonda President Andy Palmer.

"Nothing sounds better or encapsulates the emotion and excitement of the internal combustion engine more completely.

"Despite the apparently insurmountable challenges it presented, there was never any question that the Aston Martin Valkyrie would make do with anything less.

"From the outset the team at Cosworth were unflinching in their commitment to achieving benchmarks which pushed the boundaries of the possible.

"The result is a quite extraordinary engine. One which I doubt will ever be surpassed."

Only 150 Valkyries will be put on the road, with the first car scheduled to breeze down the highway in 2019. The price tag? A hefty £2.5 million.

In the interim, as an audio testimony to the Valkyrie's rather conventional approach to engine design, check out its glorious sound, reminiscent of an F1 earth-shattering thunder from the 1990s.
