Vettel keeps Ferrari on top in final practice session

Ferrari upheld its dominant form at Monza in FP3 thanks to Sebastian Vettel who led the final dress rehearsal session before this afternoon's Italian Grand Prix qualifying.

Vettel's best effort yielded a lap in 1m30.294s that gave the German a 0.032s lead over Red Bull's Max Verstappen, with Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas clocking in third.

Scuderia teammate Charles Leclerc was fourth, 0.109s adrift from Vettel, but with an identical time to Bottas, while Renault's Daniel Ricciardo and Lewis Hamilton completed the top six.

The third practice session of the weekend kicked off with a slight delay as marshals conducted work at Monza's final corner where earlier today a sausage kerb - since removed - had launched F3 racer Alex Peroni into a terrifying airborne crash from which he miraculously walked away unscathed.

Twelve minutes into the session, cars emerged from their garages. After the usual series of installation laps, everyone picked up the pace, with Mercedes' duo trialing the medium tyre compound at the outset.

Toro Rosso's Dany Kvyat briefly went to the top of the timesheet before a soft-shod Vettel laid down a 1m20.611s and Leclerc followed suit, edging his teammate by 0.159s.

The FIA has adopted adopting a zero tolerance approach to track limit abuses at the Parabolica and Haas' Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen were the first drivers to have a time deleted for surpassing the final corner's boundaries.

Given the absolute dry conditions - the first so far this weekend, the session equated to running in FP1 as everyone got a feel for their car and the track.

After a little over thirty minutes of running, Verstappen jumped to third, 0.305s adrift from Leclerc, while Hamilton - still on the medium rubber - slotted himself in to fourth.

A lull in the session ensued, broken when the Ferrari pair exited their garage, a fresh set of soft tyres bolted on to their SF90.

The Scuderia chargers appeared to engage in tow tactics, likely rehearsing their strategy for qualifying. In the process, Vettel overhauled his teammate at the top of the timing screens with a final effort in 1m20.294s.

Verstappen then popped up to P2, splitting the two Ferraris until Bottas claimed third, followed by Leclerc, Ricciardo and Hamilton.

The positions among the top-six remained unchanged, while Nico Hulkenberg, Alex Albon, Antonio Giovinazzi and Kvyat rounded off the top-ten.
