FIA and FIM collaborate on new circuit paint standard

The FIA and its motorcycle counterpart, the FIM, are collaborating to improve safety standards for circuits and competitors.

The joint effort between the two governing body institutions has already resulted in the development of a new paint standard for circuits and which will be applied to track limits, kerbing and asphalt run-off areas.

The new paint - the first of a number of collaboration projects between the FIA and the FIM - includes friction properties and visibility criteria under a variety of conditions, ensuring the paint performs consistently in both wet and dry conditions on all tracks, therefore reducing the potential for accidents due to a sudden loss of grip.

"It gives me great pleasure to welcome this collaboration with the FIM on a number of safety projects," said FIA president Jean Todt.

"By uniting our two governing bodies on safety, it means we can advance standards for all forms of motorsport worldwide."

Additional projects planned between the two bodies shall include a range of research ideas related to circuits and competitor safety devices.

FIM President Jorge Viegas added: "The FIM and FIA share circuits around the world. A collaborative approach to safety standards will not only simplify the process for the industry but will also ensure the highest level of safety for competitors worldwide."

Motor racing was a backdrop from the outset in Phillip van Osten's life. Born in Southern California, Phillip grew up with the sights and sounds of fast cars thanks to his father, Dick van Osten, an editor and writer for Auto Speed and Sport and Motor Trend. Phillip's passion for racing grew even more when his family moved to Europe and he became acquainted with the extraordinary world of Grand Prix racing. He was an early contributor to the monthly French F1i Magazine, often providing a historic or business perspective on Formula 1's affairs. In 2012, he co-authored along with fellow journalist Pierre Van Vliet the English-language adaptation of a limited edition book devoted to the great Belgian driver Jacky Ickx. He also authored "The American Legacy in Formula 1", a book which recounts the trials and tribulations of American drivers in Grand Prix racing. Phillip is also a commentator for Belgian broadcaster Be.TV for the US Indycar series.
