Alonso to star in new Amazon documentary series

Fernando Alonso is the subject of a new documentary commissioned by Amazon Prime that chronicles the Spanish driver's 2019 season and the build-up to his participation in the Dakar rally-raid.

The five-part series - simply titled "Fernando" - will feature intimate access to Alonso throughout the past year, documenting his failed qualifying attempts at Indianapolis, his second win in the Le Mans 24 Hours and his Dakar debut in Saudi Arabia.

Javier Mendez, director of global content for production company The Mediopro Studio, said the series would offer "a personal and up-close vision of the champion, quite different from the public profile we have seen."

Mendez added that the docu-series would share the driver’s reflexions about "a possible come back to F1."

"Fernando is a winner and his goal along this year has been to demonstrate that he is the best driver in any four wheels vehicle."

"Fernando" will debut on the streaming platform in Spain, France, Italy, U.K., and Latin America later in 2020.

Alonso's 2020 season so far only includes a return to Indianapolis, now scheduled in mate August after the show case event was postponed by IndyCar due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Like his motorsport colleagues, Alonso patiently awaits for the world to exit its current standstill.

"The IndyCar and the Indy500 have published their new schedule, but until this is all over, I don’t have much desire to fight or to think about putting the helmet back on," the Spaniard said on Instagram.

Indy is currently the only race on Alonso's agenda, the two-time F1 world champion having kicked off his year with a debut participation in the grueling Dakar, rally-raid.

The prospects of Alonso returning to F1 in 2021 are remote despite the 38-year-old's regular mention of such a possibility.

While several drivers among the front-runners will be seeking new contracts at the end of the year, none of the sport's top teams appear interested in including the Spaniard in their future line-ups.

As for a full-time IndyCar involvement, Alonso has so far shied away from such a plan.

"I will decide after the summer," he added. "Everything has been postponed, including the new rules for Formula 1 until the end of 2021.

"I also have to see whether or not I will do the Dakar next year. If it is not next year, I will do it again later."
