Domenicali: Talks of return to Ferrari just 'baseless gossip'

Former Scuderia boss Stefano Domenicali, who now leads Lamborghini, says there is no credence to the rumors that say that he could soon return to Ferrari as Mattia Binotto's replacement.

It's not the first time Domenicali is the subject of speculation regarding an involvement with Ferrari, conjecture that ramps up whenever the House of Maranello endures a troubled period.

The Lamborghini boss, who was at the helm of the Scuderia from 2008 to 2014, admits to having a good relationship with Ferrari chairman John Elkann, but the chatter in the wings, whenever it gets louder, is just "baseless gossip".

"As soon as you talk about Ferrari, there are rumours that are impossible to control," Domenicali told Corriere dello Sport.

"I have known Elkann for years, I have known that environment for a lifetime. Of course we talk to each other, we discuss the key themes of the automotive world.

"But the hypothesis of a return to Maranello remains a baseless gossip."

Asked to rate Binotto's work and achievements since the latter took over the responsibility of the Scuderia from his predecessor Maurizio Arrivabene, Domenicali was complimentary of the Swiss engineer.

"I am convinced that he did a good job both as technical director and as team principal, in a role where he learned quickly and demonstrated skill and balance," said the Italian.

"A lot of energy was spent last year on the management of the drivers.

"The champions do not always respect the orders of the team, especially if they are two in pursuit of their ambitions.

"On the other hand, they are at the center of the stage and this determines an exposed front, a continuous attention behind the scenes.

"We need a competitive car," he concluded. "All other problems are less important."
