Monza confirms 2020 race - extends Italian GP deal to 2025

Monza has confirmed that it will host the Italian Grand Prix behind closed doors in September while Formula 1 will race on at the Temple of Speed until 2025.

Monza and the Automobile Club d'Italia had secured a five-year deal covering the 2020-24 seasons just before last year's race, suggesting the one-year extension is perhaps the result of F1's negotiations with the venue to stage an event behind closed doors on September 6.

"While many circuits have had to give up because of the health emergency, Monza will be there," said Monza mayor Dario Allevi. "Albeit behind closed doors.

"And Formula 1 has decided to extend the contract, just stipulated, with our race track by one year. Racing cars will continue to speed through the temple of speed until at least 2025."

Monza is expected to bookend in September a run of eight races in Europe starting with a double-header in Austria on July 5.

But Italy could tag on another event, as doubts grow by the day about the viability of staging races in Baku, Sochi and Singapore.

Mugello circuit - owned by Ferrari - is rumored to be in discussions with F1 about organizing a race behind closed doors on the weekend after Monza.

Formula 1 is expected to publish any day now its revised 2020 calendar.
