Tsunoda self-confidence is 'unbelievable' says Marko

AlphaTauri rookie Yuki Tsunoda boasts an "unbelievable" level of self-confidence according to Helmut Marko who says the Red Bull protégé is only interested in "being the fastest".

The 20-year-old Japanese driver has made quite an impression on the F1 paddock since his first on-track appearance during pre-season testing at Sakhir which was followed by a top-ten finish in the Bahrain GP.

The plaudits poured in for the young apprentice whom Marko views as a great addition to F1's grid and as a world champion in the making.

"He’s also a charismatic, funny guy in his small overall appearance," said the Red Bull motorsport boss, speaking to Formula1.de on the outlet's YouTube channel.

"I think he’s very, very positive for Formula 1. We are very happy we have him."

Despite the hype surrounding the AlphaTauri charger, Marko says his young hopeful "who lets the car fly" is taking it all in his stride.

"He's not burdened by all these statements in any way," added the Austrian.

"He has a self-confidence that is unbelievable. He's only interested in driving in front, to be the fastest."

Tsunoda's remarkable entry among the elite has already sparked speculation that he could step up to sister outfit Red Bull Racing as soon as next season. But Marko is keeping the pundits' expectations in check.

"Last year you couldn't even pronounce Tsunoda, you only talked about Schumacher. And now suddenly he's supposed to be next year be in Red Bull Racing!" he said, taunting the media.

"Let’s wait and see. We have had the first of 23 races. Let’s see how he develops.

"We knew from the beginning that we had an unbelievable diamond in the rough. We won’t burn it up.

"We’ll look at his development and then make our decisions in good time."
