Kimi Raikkonen has been handed a 20-second penalty for his last lap collision with Sebastian Vettel in the Austrian Grand Prix, while Nikita Mazepin and Nicholas Latifi were also penalized for failing to slow as they passed the incident.
The Alfa Romeo driver was initially sanctioned with a post-race drive-through penalty, but the latter was logically converted into a largely irrelevant time penalty.
Raikkonen veered into Vettel on the final lap at Turn 5, sending the Aston Martin driver into the gravel on the left-hand side of the track, an incident that resulted in double-waved flags.
“The stewards heard from the driver of Car 7 (Kimi Raikkonen), the driver of Car 5 (Sebastian Vettel), team representatives and reviewed video evidence,” the stewards said.
"Exiting T5 RAI closed the door on VET, which caused a collision taking both cars off the track.”
"Obviously our wheels touched and off we went...," explained the Finn after the race.
"Unfortunate end but it didn’t change much, because we were both out of the points, but I’ll have to see it from the outside.
"I saw him there, but I don’t know how we ended up touching. I don’t know if I move or he moved... I’ll have to see it [again]."
The stewards' investigation into the crash also involved a group of drivers who were suspected of failing to slow for the double-yellow flags waved in the zone.
Carlos Sainz Jnr, Sergio Perez, Daniel Ricciardo, Charles Leclerc and Pierre Gasly, who had all finished among the top ten, were cleared of any wrongdoing, as was Antonio Giovinazzi.
But Mazepin and Latifi were hit with 10-second stop and go penalties that were converted after the race into 30-second time penalties. The pair were also given three penalty points, bringing their respective tally to five and six points in total.
Finally, George Russell, who was investigated by the stewards for allegedly moving under braking to defend his position against Raikkonen, was also cleared of any wrongdoing.
