New Lewis Hamilton documentary picked up by Apple TV+

Apple TV+ has acquired the rights to a new feature documentary on Lewis Hamilton that is currently in production.

Produced by Hamilton himself along with associate Penni Thow, Box to Box Films – the producers of Drive to Survive - and One Community, the film will follow the seven-time world champion on and off the track, with filming crews given unprecedented access to the Mercedes driver's life.

The as-yet-unnamed feature is set to be directed by British documentary filmmaker Matt Kay and will include “an all-star cast of guest interviews”.

Former HBO CEO Richard Plepper will be executive producer of the project along with Scott Budnick.

“Hamilton has blazed an uncharted trail professionally, socially and culturally, and transformed the sport on a global scale," read a statement from Apple TV+.

“Coming from a working-class family, Lewis succeeded in a sport where the odds were stacked against him but where his talent shone through, allowing him to dominate the sport for over a decade.

“Hamilton is currently the only Black driver to race in the Formula 1 series. He embraced what made him different and his rise to the top of his career has made him fiercely committed to using his platform to influence positive change for future generations.”

Hamilton is also reportedly involved in a Hollywood epic on Formula 1 produced by Apple Studios and set to star Brad Pitt.

According to industry media Deadline, the film will have Brad Pitt playing "a racer who comes out of retirement to mentor a younger driver and take his final stab at glory on the track as the younger driver’s teammate".

The blockbuster package to which 'Top Gun: Maverick' director Joseph Kosinski has been attached as well as Paramount screenwriter Ehren Kruger shall be headed by famed Top Gun and Days of Thunder producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
