This summer's British Grand Prix will see a record 142,000 fans converge to Silverstone on race day to enjoy the tenth round of the 2022 F1 World Championship.

The event's promoter – the BRDC – says the race has sold in the shortest time in its history following unprecedented demand for tickets, a surge that follows the healthy growth of Formula 1 itself.

"We have experienced unprecedented demand for tickets for the 2022 Formula One British Grand Prix," said Stuart Pringle, Silverstone’s managing director.

"We have never reached a position of sellout so early in the year.

"We have increased capacity slightly by adding extra grandstand seats and anticipate our race day crowd to reach 142,000 this year.

"If sales continue at this pace, we expect to be sold out across all three days."

That prospect implies surpassing last year's British Grand Prix record three-day attendance that reached 356,000 spectators at Silverstone.

Formula 1's numbers have been trending higher since the global pandemic has started to subside, its popularity boosted by last year's epic finale in Abu Dhabi between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, and also helped by the positive impact of the Netflix Drive to Survive docuseries.

The sport is leveraging on its sustained growth, adding new venues to its schedule, like Miami where F1 will race next month or Las Vegas which will take its place on F1's calendar from 2023.
