Mick Schumacher suffered another big impact this weekend, one that left his Haas VF-22 in pieces for the second time this season after he went off at the exit of the swimming pool complex during the Monaco Grand Prix.
He lost control of the car coming through the chicane on lap 26, and snapped to the left hand side glancing the Armco barrier before going into the TecPro at the exit of the turn.
The impact split the chassis into two and meant a mandatory trip to the medical centre for Schumacher to undergo evaluation, where he received the all-clear from the doctors.
"I’m feeling alright," said Schumacher when he arrived back in parc ferme to talk with the media under the ensuing red flag. "It felt super weird.
"From what I saw on the video, it just seemed like we were like 10cm further out and that kind of triggered maybe a wet patch or whatever with the front wheel, which then translated into a rear wheel slide.
"That's where basically the rear came around. I tried to correct it and that's why it went to the left," he commented. "It's very, very unfortunate and very annoying.
"In terms of pace we were definitely there and it’s just a matter of keeping it on track," he said. "Unfortunately I wasn’t able to do that. The pace felt strong and it felt like we were able to attack and push. but I went a bit too wide.
"That’s enough to lose all grip that you thought you had, and the result is what happened.” Schumacher also had a big crash in Jeddah during the build-up to the second race of the season, which wrote off his car and meant he sat out the Saudi Arabia GP.
The latest major accident came just minutes after his team mate Kevin Magnussen was also forced to retire from the race as the result of what the team described as a water pressure loss.
"It was going well until that. We were in P11, much faster than Bottas," Magnussen said. "The car was great, I had really good pace in these conditions.
"I was really looking forward to that pit stop," he continued. "A couple of guys behind had already pitted for intermediates, but we were still on full wets and wanted to go straight to the slick and that was a big opportunity.
"I had just said to the team I wanted to pit for slicks," he added. "Of course I'm really disappointed, for myself and the team today, because we lost a good opportunity to score points and come back from a disappointing day yesterday.
"Kevin’s car was really fast," reported Haas team principal Guenther Steiner. "We were just waiting for our opportunity to pass Bottas at the pit stop, either under or over cutting to get by him and chase the field.
"He could easily follow him, [but] he then had an issue with a water leak on his ERS system.
"With Mick we obviously saw what happened. It’s not very satisfactory having a big crash again. We need to see how we move forward from here.”
