Scheckter's private F1 collection set for Monaco auction

F1 world champion Jody Scheckter has opted to part with his spectacular private collection of racing machines that span over a decade of the South African driver’s motorsport and F1 career.

The impressive selection will go under the hammer at RM Sotheby’s prestigious May 11 auction at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, during the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique weekend.

All twelve cars shall be offered without reserve but with a combined upper estimate of €21 million or approximately $23 million.

The undisputable centerpiece of Scheckter’s collection is his 1979 championship winning Ferrari 312 T4, the last car to deliver the Drivers’ title to the House of Maranello during Enzo Ferrari’s reign.

Designed by the legendary Mauro Forghieri, the 312 T4 was the Italian outfit’s first full ground-effect Grand Prix car.

Powered by Ferrari’s 3-litre flat-12 engine, the car was the winner of all three of Scheckter's victories in 1979 – triumphing in Belgium, Monaco and in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. On its own, the 312 T4 is estimated to be between €5,250,000 and €6,500,000.

Two McLaren cars are also featured in the 74-year-old collection: an M19A driven by Scheckter on his F1 debut at Watkins Glen in 1972, and chassis M23-2, steered by the South African in several races in 1973 and the very car that triumphed at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in the skilled hands of Peter Revson.

Also up for auction is a recreated iconic six-wheeled Tyrrell P34, a car built during the 2000s using a period unused chassis.

The 1977 Wolf WR1, designed by Harvey Postlethwaite and driven by Scheckter to a second-place finish in the F1 driver standings, joins the auction block alongside a 1975 Tyrrell 007.

But the collection extends beyond F1 cars, with two Formula 2 cars - a superb papaya 1972 McLaren M21 and a 1973 Rondel M1 – and a 1971 Merlyn Mk21 Formula 3 racer included in the sale.

Finally, the series of lots are completed by Scheckter’s 1969 Merlyn Mk11a, which clinched the 1970 British Formula Ford championship, his 1974 Trojan T101, champion of the 1974 Formula 5000 series, and a 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ sports car that participated in the legendary Targa Florio road race in 1961 and 1963.
