Porsche’s da Costa takes thrilling Misano E-Prix victory

The 2024 Formula E season continues to be a showcase of diversity, with Porsche’s Antonio Felix da Costa becoming the sixth different winner in as many races at the Misano E-Prix.

Despite qualifying a lowly 13th, da Costa displayed exceptional racecraft to snatch victory with a daring move on Nissan’s Oliver Rowland just three laps from the finish line.

Subsequently, the Portuguese driver succesfully defended against Rowland's advances until reaching the checkered flag, while reigning champion Jake Dennis surged from 17th on the grid to secure a podium finish. This capped off a thrilling race filled with close battles and dramatic lead changes.

Misano’s tight layout made energy management a crucial factor. The leader inevitably loses efficiency due to air resistance, while those behind benefit from the slipstream. This created a constant accordion effect in the pack, with drivers vying for the most advantageous position.

The opening lap witnessed a chaotic multi-car incident at Turn 1, with championship contender Sam Bird (NEOM McLaren) and Nick Cassidy (Jaguar TCS Racing) suffering race-ending damage. This foreshadowed the high pressure and close racing that would define the entire Misano E-Prix.

The lead changed hands numerous times throughout the race, with eight different drivers holding the top spot at various points. Both da Costa and Rowland took turns leading, showcasing the competitiveness of the field.

With three laps remaining, da Costa capitalized on a crucial opportunity to overtake Rowland for the lead. A fierce battle ensued between the two drivers, pushing their energy calculations to the limit for a dramatic flat-out finish.

Ultimately, da Costa held on to claim his first victory of the season and cap off a display of pure racing excitement.

While the Porsche charger stole the show at Misano, the championship picture remains intriguing. Oliver Rowland leads the standings with 73 points, followed closely by reigning champion Jake Dennis (Andretti) at 68 points.

With several strong contenders and unpredictable races, the 2024 Formula E season will continue to be a thrilling battle for the championship crown.
