Hamilton planning talks with Wolff to manage Ferrari transition

Lewis Hamilton says that he intends to hold discussions with Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff in order to manage his exit from the Brackley squad and ease his transition to Ferrari for 2025.

Hamilton’s unexpected departure from Silver Arrow team, announced ahead of the start of the 2024 season, has left both Mercedes and Ferrari with strategic puzzles to solve.

While Hamilton remains committed to delivering a strong final season with Mercedes, the details of his transition to Ferrari still need to be worked out, mostly in terms of how the team manages sharing – or rather restricting – information with their soon-to-be departing driver.

Unlike Hamilton’s move from McLaren to Mercedes, which occurred much later in the season, the early timing of the announcement of the Briton’s transfer to the Scuderia now requires a delicate balancing act between honoring his commitment to Mercedes while laying the groundwork for a smooth transition to the Scuderia.

“I think it will start with a conversation with Toto, because I don't know how to navigate”, Hamilton said. “I've never been in this position before at this point of the year.

“When I was leaving McLaren, it was towards the end of the season. I didn't get to go to Mercedes till, I think, it was in December when I had my first seat fit, after the season was done.

“I'm not quite sure how I'm going to navigate it.”

Hamilton, whose last win with Mercedes dates all the way back to the 2021 Saudi Arabian GP, reiterated his unwavering commitment to helping Mercedes het back on track.

Securing a win and finally snapping his 49-race winless streak remains his top priority.

"Right now, I want to finish on a high here", he added. "So all my energy is going into this. Of course, there's excitement for the future. But right now, we're going through a difficult place. That's my challenge.

"That's where all my energy is going, to try and figure out how we can get ourselves back to the top. How can I work with the guys? How can I give better debriefs, give them better direction to get back fighting at the front?

"I'm a competitor first and foremost, so I want to win. Just thinking about the next year isn't going to help me do that."
