As Mercedes embarks on a new era without Lewis Hamilton, the team reflects on the unparalleled contributions of the seven-time World Champion, whose relentless pursuit of victory drove its historic success in Formula 1.
According to Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin, Hamilton’s “phobia of losing” was not only a defining trait but also a source of relentless motivation for the Brackley-based outfit.
Hamilton officially joined Ferrari at the start of 2025 after a record-breaking stint with Mercedes that spanned over a decade.
During his time with the team, Hamilton clinched six of his seven Drivers’ Championships, while Mercedes secured eight consecutive Constructors’ titles, making it one of the most dominant partnerships in the sport’s history.
Shovlin believes that Hamilton’s unique mindset played a crucial role in maintaining the team’s high standards year after year.
In an interview with The New York Times, Shovlin opened up on Hamilton’s unwavering commitment to success and how it continually uplifted the team.
“Well, there are no other drivers like him, so you could definitely say he is unique, from that point of view,” the Briton said.
“He’s good fun to work with. He’s committed to success, as we all are, and in a team, that’s what you would ask of everybody.”
However, it’s Hamilton’s near-obsessive drive to avoid failure that Shovlin highlighted as a key differentiator from other top drivers.
“Lewis has got his own, it’s almost like a phobia of losing that drives his work ethic,” he explained.
“And that’s great, because when you get a driver who brings that to the team, they are endlessly pushing, endlessly wanting to improve. And it brings an awful lot of energy to the team.”
While many great drivers despise losing, Shovlin remarked that Hamilton’s reaction to setbacks set him apart from his peers.
“No good drivers like losing, they all hate it. That’s absolutely standard,” noted the Mercedes engineer.
“It is the work and the worry that that triggers within Lewis that I think sets him aside from most others.
"He’s the only driver I can think of that I’ve worked with where it manifests itself to such a degree.”
This relentless focus on avoiding failure, combined with his extraordinary talent, helped Hamilton sustain his dominance over such a prolonged period.
As Mercedes prepares for its first season without Hamilton since 2012, the team is facing a significant transition.
Eighteen-year-old rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli will step into Hamilton’s seat, partnering George Russell, who is now an experienced hand in his seventh season in Formula 1.
Antonelli, however, has shown immense promise, but filling the shoes of one of the greatest drivers in F1 history will undoubtedly be a daunting challenge.
Shovlin’s reflection on Hamilton’s impact underscores just how integral the British driver was to Mercedes’ golden era.
While the team looks ahead to new opportunities and challenges, Hamilton’s legacy of relentless determination and his “phobia of losing” will remain a cornerstone of its identity for years to come.
