Newey sensing ‘déjà vu’ at Aston Martin – but not the good kind

Aston Martin’s master designer Adrian Newey has admitted to experiencing at the Silverstone-based outfit “a bit of déjà vu” compared to his early days at Red Bull Racing – but not in a positive way.

After an astonishing 19-year stint that yielded eight Drivers’ Championships and six Constructors’ titles with Red Bull, Newey stunned the paddock last year when he announced his departure from the Milton Keynes juggernaut.

Within a few months, Lawrence Stroll’s ambitious Aston Martin team announced his arrival as Managing Technical Partner, signaling a bold step in the squad’s quest to break into Formula 1’s elite.

With a seismic regulation overhaul looming on the 2026, the timing of Newey’s move couldn’t have been more dramatic.

Opportunity Amid the Mist

Speaking recently on James Allen’s F1 podcast, Newey painted a picture of opportunity, but also of uncertainty.

“I started in March. Difficult to judge,” Newey said when asked about the team’s current trajectory.

“Because of this big regulation change, then everybody has a bit of a reset. Chances are that the top teams this year will be the top teams next year. But occasionally, there’s a bit of disruption, let’s say.”

Formula 1’s upcoming technical overhaul will introduce new chassis and power unit rules, potentially reshuffling the competitive order. Yet, even for someone of Newey’s experience, he admits it’s too soon to read the tea leaves.

“It happened the last time there was a big regulation change to an extent in 2009, where Ferrari and McLaren, who were the big ones in 2008, floundered, and Brawn and Red Bull came forwards,” he recalled.

“So it does happen, but by and large, the same teams kind of tend to keep on at the top.

“But I think the main point is that you ask, how’s it going? The honest truth is I’ve got no idea. Because it’s this reset, you don’t know whether you’re doing good, bad or indifferently relative to the opposition, because you have no knowledge of what they’re doing.”

Echoes of Red Bull’s Early Struggles

Aston Martin’s evolution – from the modest days of Force India and Racing Point to its current incarnation under Stroll’s ownership – has been marked by ambition and heavy investment.

Yet, as Newey hinted, ambition alone doesn’t immediately translate into belief.

“But I think also on the how’s it going question, I think this is also the culture thing,” he said.

“So Red Bull, when I started, was the ashes of Team Jaguar, that had been under Ford management for many years and had never had any significant success, and so, people had started to lose belief that they could ever win a race.”

The parallels, according to Newey, are uncomfortably close.

“Once you stop believing that you can do that, then, everything goes wrong, because complacency sets in, laziness sets in, lack of self-belief creeps in,” he reflected.

“If you’re not careful, blame culture can set in as well. And so that was quite a difficult thing to overturn at Red Bull.

“I won’t say too much, but there is a bit of déjà vu at the moment.”

For Aston Martin – a team still seeking its first Formula 1 victory – Newey’s words are both a warning and a call to action.

Having been instrumental in transforming his previous outfit into a championship powerhouse, he knows better than anyone that success begins with mindset.

For Team Silverstone, the stakes are sky-high. Will Newey instill that winning belief, or does this déjà vu foreshadow a tougher climb than anyone anticipated?

The 2026 revolution is coming – and Newey’s candid revelations just turned up the heat.
