Miami GP: Antonelli secures third consecutive pole - Verstappen P2

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli tightened his grip on the 2026 title fight by storming to a third consecutive pole position in a sweltering qualifying session for the Miami Grand Prix.

The Mercedes driver delivered when it mattered most, fending off a late charge from Max Verstappen to secure the top spot on the grid, while Sprint winner Lando Norris concluded his day a disappointing fourth.

In punishing conditions, with track temperatures soaring beyond 50°C, Antonelli wasted no time asserting control. After a strong showing in the earlier phases, he delivered a decisive lap of 1m27.798s on his first run in Q3 – a time none of his rivals could beat.

That initial effort proved decisive. While Verstappen improved on his final attempt to snatch second place ahead of Charles Leclerc, Antonelli’s benchmark remained untouched.

Behind the top four, Antonelli’s Mercedes teammate George Russell clocked in fifth. Lewis Hamilton slotted into sixth, while Oscar Piastri endured a quieter session in seventh.

Drama builds through the field

Qualifying began under intense heat, with Verstappen initially setting the pace in Q1 before Antonelli surged to the top with a commanding lap.

Further down the order, early trouble struck for Audi as Gabriel Bortoleto suffered a dramatic power unit failure, his car stopping trackside after emitting flames. The incident compounded a difficult weekend for the team following Nico Hulkenberg’s earlier issues.

Elsewhere, Aston Martin and Cadillac once again struggled for pace, while rookie Arvid Lindblad was eliminated in 17th. Piastri narrowly avoided a shock Q1 exit despite a compromised final run on used tyres.

Q2 brought its own tension. Norris briefly found himself at risk after running off track on his first attempt, but recovered to progress comfortably. Verstappen topped the session, while Alpine enjoyed a standout performance with both cars reaching Q3 – led by Franco Colapinto, who reached the final shootout for the first time since 2024.

Tight margins, rising stakes

The final phase proved fiercely competitive, with just fractions separating the front-runners behind Antonelli. Verstappen’s late improvement highlighted Red Bull Racing’s growing form, while Ferrari maintained a strong presence through Leclerc and Hamilton.

Colapinto secured his best-ever qualifying result with eighth, edging Isack Hadjar and teammate Pierre Gasly.

With three straight poles now to his name, Antonelli heads into Sunday as the clear favorite. But with thunderstorms looming over Miami and a tightly packed field behind him, the fight for victory remains wide open.
