Miami GP brought forward by three hours to beat looming storms

Formula 1 has dramatically revised the schedule for Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix, bringing the race start forward by three hours in a bid to avoid severe weather forecast to hit the circuit later in the afternoon.

Originally slated for a 4pm local start, the race at the Miami International Autodrome will now get underway at 1pm local time – 18h00 UK and 19h00 CET – after urgent discussions on Saturday evening between Formula 1 management, the FIA and event organisers.

The decision follows forecasts predicting heavy rain and thunderstorms across South Florida, with conditions expected to deteriorate significantly as the day progresses.

By moving the race earlier, officials hope to create a wider operational window to complete the full grand prix distance before the most dangerous weather arrives.

Weather threat force swift action

In a joint statement, Formula One Management and the FIA explained the rationale behind the unusual scheduling change.

"Following discussions between FIA, FOM and the Miami promoter, the decision has been taken to move the start of Sunday’s Miami Grand Prix to 13:00 local time in Miami due to the weather forecast that is expected to bring heavier rainstorms later in the afternoon close to the original planned race start time," the statement said.

It added: "This decision has been taken to ensure the least amount of disruption to the race, and to ensure the maximum possible window to complete the Grand Prix in the best conditions and to prioritise the safety of drivers, fans, teams and staff."

While rain itself presents a familiar challenge for Formula 1, the greater concern in Miami is the threat of lightning. Under local safety regulations, any lightning strike detected within an eight-mile radius of the venue triggers an immediate suspension of track activity, requiring all personnel and spectators to seek shelter.

Competition can only resume after a 30-minute period without any further lightning detected in the area, making storm timing a critical factor in race planning.

The revised timetable is designed to reduce the likelihood of such interruptions derailing the event.

New 2026 rain protocol activated

Compounding the significance of the weather threat is the activation of Formula 1’s new rain hazard protocol, introduced for the 2026 season.

The FIA formally declared a rain hazard ahead of qualifying after forecasts indicated more than a 40 percent chance of rain during the race. The protocol grants teams greater technical flexibility under parc fermé conditions, allowing changes that would normally be prohibited once cars are locked into their race setup.

Teams are now permitted to raise ride heights to better cope with standing water and slippery conditions. They can also adjust the angle of the front wing flap for Straight Mode to optimise performance in wet-weather running.

Should race control declare low-grip conditions during the Grand Prix itself, additional restrictions will come into force. Drivers would lose access to the boost mode of their power units, while MGU-K deployment would be reduced from 350kW to 250kW.

Straight Mode functionality would also be limited, with activation permitted only on the front wing rather than both aerodynamic elements.

These measures are intended to improve stability and controllability of the radically revised 2026-spec cars in compromised conditions.

The weather-driven reshuffle also affects Formula 2, with its feature race now scheduled to begin at 09:25 local time.

With the threat of severe weather hanging over race day, Formula 1 officials will hope the earlier start proves enough to ensure Miami’s showcase event can run uninterrupted – and that the battle on track is decided by racing rather than the radar.
